Entertainment centers, armoires and similar furniture items can be converted into craft centers.

While a room dedicated to crafts can be great, it isolates the crafty person while others are in the entertainment sector of the home having fun without them.

Sad.

Having a place to quickly access and store craft projects makes for a room that more people can share.

Sharing is good.
Free up your chairs by getting an extra one. Nailing them to a wall frees up floor space and prevents people from whining about not being able to sit because of all the clutter.

Sometimes they even work better upside down.

I have demoted old dressers to the garage for tool storage, and they do help with the clutter outside. Here is how to salvage one to help with the clutter inside.

Closet organization systems may seem expensive, but consider this: you use your closet multiple times, every day of your life.

The cost of the system is more than made up for in the time saved in finding your clothes quickly.

It also saves you money by allowing you to easily see what you have, so you won't waste money buying an item that you already own.

But first, before you go and buy an expensive system, do some closet therapy:

1. Remove clothes that could be stored elsewhere and store them there: Place them in a dresser drawer, demote to a guest room closet, etc.

It may be cheaper to get a second hand dresser than buying a closet system. If you have the room, this is a much easier system to set up. Just plop it down where you want it and fill it up. Shoes can go there too.

2. Throw some away. Harvest the buttons and make rags out of some, if you must, but dispose of them in some way.

3. Remove clothes that need mending. You aren't wearing them anyway. If the mending pile gets too big, refer to rule #2.

4. Give some away. Be careful here. It might make you feel better giving your junk away than actually putting it in the garbage can, but people don't want your trash. Don't make them do it for you. Try putting a box of the better stuff out for some college kids to pick through. Toss out what is left.

Still need room? OK, now get that system installed and begin enjoying the benefits of your new closet.

Some bins have sides that do not go all the way up. They allow you a peek at the contents before you open them. They are easy to open.

But if you live in an area where there is high humidity, the contents can get damp. Insects can get in and out easily as well.

Use the bin system where these factors are not a problem. Otherwise, you may be organized, but you will not want to open those bins.
Those small places, like balconies, can be put to good use if are creative. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Get that clutter off the floor and make more room in your small room. Look at the space between your ceiling and the window frames. Somewhere in your home, an extra shelf or two might be just the thing to declutter your closets and floors.

That little space at the bottom of the closet seems a bit too small for most people's collection of shoes.

Thanks to some creative folks, ideas abound about how and where to put that ever growing collection of footwear.

Some shoes are works of art. They can be released from their dark prison of a closet and in return for their freedom, bring a bit of design elegance and cheerful color to any living space.

Designs include creative elements like towel racks, staircases, baskets on wheels and even wall moulding that allow storage on walls.

For those who can't or won't drill holes in a wall, different shelving options, stand alone storage like China hutches or Ikea book shelves may be a good solution.

Apartment Therapy has a good article with plenty of pictures about this:

I think we spend more time looking for the tape and trying to get it working than actually wrapping our packages.

So, any device that can tame unruly tape and put those rolls in a row is a good one.

This idea came from Popular Woodworking Magazine, where you can find the basic design ideas.
It Will Repay Your Kindness

I felt bad when I saw this four drawer file cabinet on the curb destined to destruction.

My wife Tina and I rescued it and gave it a new paint job. We also gave it a new home.

It repays our effort daily by keeping numerous tools, extension cords and various garden supplies in order and out of sight.

We also had a pair of two-drawer file cabinets that we made into a desk. It was easy. We just bought a cheap door and laid it over the top. It has since been replaced, but I have a picture of a similar one below.

With all the "paperless" offices of today, finding a cheap or free file cabinet is not that difficult. Better hurry though. Their breed is becoming less numerous every day.

I like this idea, with one caveat. On the plus side, it organizes shoes and follows the Japanese strategy of keeping the house cleaner by keeping those dirty shoes away from clean floors.

But what if someone falls and injures themselves on one of those hooks?

Is the guaranteed daily benefit of a cleaner home worth the small chance of a bigger problem, like an injury and a lawsuit?

I have already repurposed one of my file cabinet into a tool storage container, because my computerized office made it obsolete. Buying a Kindle has also created some free book shelf space that we have used for tool storage. If we get any more freed up, this idea might actually become useful.

Kid's toys in a home often are arranged in a pattern that resembles an explosion or some other apocalyptic disaster. This idea is a step in the right direction in the journey back to an orderly home.

I can see that the kids might actually have fun using it. After all, big people park their cars like this, so in their play time imitating adult behavior, parking becomes part of the play experience. In a perfect world, this would true.
